A DASTARDLY DEED
AK EXPLOSION WORKS HAVOC. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, October 2. (Received October 2, at 9.10 ajn.) Charters To wore was startled yesterday morning by a, terrific explosion. It proved to be the -work of a dynanritard in Queen Cross mine, which was wrecked. A mill was also seriously damaged on the adjakring property. Portions of the machinery and debris were hurled a hundred yards, whilst tie people bring in the nagbberhood were almost thrown from their beds by the force of the explosion. Windows and crockery were broken in all directions. Several narrow escapes are reported. The end of a cylinder anaahod through the wall of the bouse of Manager MacEarcn and cut the piano in two, whilst, the furniture in MaoLaren’e and adjoining houses was destroyed. The two watchmen, who were sleeping in the mall, micacuhxniy escaped with slight injuries. The mill had been drained up at midnight on Saturday, and as there was no amalgam on the premises the watchmen went to bed at two. It is believed the perpetrsboiß were arwirr* of this, as the explosiwi occurred a coapie of hours later. It is sujpoaed that they placed a case of dynamite between the high and low-pressure cylinders—the roost- vulnerable point. The sound of the explosion was heard a distance of seventeen miles, and people roshed from their beds in parse.
