EDUCATION BOARDS’ CONFERENCE

In connection with the Conference of Education Boards to bo held at Wellington. commencing on the 12th met., the following list of subjects was suggested for submission by the North Canterbury Education Board's representatives for discussion at the Oanferecoe: —ft) The general relation of the boards to the department; (2) restrictions placed on education boards in regard to the expenditure of the building giant; (3) training of teachers, the provision for stall, and the question of its efficiency ; (4) school books—advisability or otherwise of securing a greater uniformity ; (5) relation of primary education to secondary, university, and technical instruction; (6) the necessity of a more assured finance in connection with technical education as regards both buddings and administration ; (7) the Manna! arid Technical Instruction Act in relation to the carrying on of “ school” as distinguished from “ continuaIfcm * iuwl " tef-hnTcal * daises; (8) fmall country schools—the difficulty of obtaining ■aritaKk teachers; (9) scholarship and pupil-teachers’ examinations in relation to the change recently introduced by the department; (10) sparsely-populated districts tion of their children; (11) staffs and salaries—4he need of some measure of freedom allowing a temporary adjustment of salaries; (12) classification of teachers, indud mg the subjects of appointments, promotions, and transfer of teachers; (IS) “ freedom of classification. “ in relation to the promotion of pupils from Standards 111., IV., and V. ; (14) whether interchange of inspectors by arrangement between the beards is desirable; (15) whether the system of payment on average attendance should be abolished in favor of fixed salaries ; (16) dearer definition regarding committees’ powers of appointing teachers; (17) question of school discipline.
