CHRISTCHURCH ITEMS.
HE [Special to the Stab.] CHEETUHURCH, February 3. On the occasion of White's arrest for burglary in Sydney he was captured by Constable Maher, tine policeman who, with Constable Guilfoyle, was shot by Digby and Grand, who were subsequently hanged for that crime. He finished his last term in Wellington Gaol on January 24, and came to Chrrstchurch immediately. A brother of his is serving a sentence of three years' imprisonment in New South Wales for shooting at a constable. White bought the revolver that he used on Tuesday m Dnnedin. Dr Malcolm Thomson, who has just joined the staff of the Christchurch Hospital, and Mr A. E. Flower, a master of Christ's college, were among those who narrowly escaped injury when the express train from the South was derailed near Oamaru on Tuesday. They were in the rear compartment of the fust carriage which came oil the line at an angle of about sixty degrees and broke through the fence, falling ou its side. The rear platform of the carnage was wrecked, and the corridor was considerably damaged, but Dr Thomson andiMr Flower were able to find a way out through one of the windows. They were Jiaken, but were fortunate enough to escape without further injury. Mr Charles F. D. Cook, eldest son of Professor Cook, has been chosen as the Canterbury candidate for the Rhodes scholarship. His name was sent up last year, when he was reported to have narrowly inissed election. Mr F. M. B. Fisher will fire the first shot in the local political campaign on the 15th inst. He declares that heis not _ an Oppositionist, but an Independent Libei ral. Both personally and politically he is | known to be bitterly opposed to the Pre- | mier. I ■
