HIGH SCHOOLS GOVERNORS

A meeting of the Otago High Schools Hoard of Governors, held last evening, was attended by Messrs J. R, Sinclair (chairman) a&d J. M*R. Callaway, the Hon. ,T. Fergus, and Dr Church.

The Chairman reported having , examined accounts totalling £537 19s 3d.—Passed accordingly: Balances on January 31 were reported as follow > —£s2B Is lid on the working account; and £1,023 Is on No. 4 capital account, making a total of £1,650 2s lid, less outstanding cheques £529 11s—leaving the credit balance, at £1,020 11s lid.

Advioo was received that Messrs J. M‘R. Gallqway and J. R. Sinclair had been reappointed members of the Board of Gover. nors by the Education Department, and the Hon. T. Fergus and Mr T. Mackenzie, M-H.R-, by the Education Board. Results of the continuation examinations, showing that twenty-five boys out of the fifty-four and eighteen giris out of fortyone passed, and lists of the Education Board’s junior and senior'scholarships were received, together with lists of those entitled to free education. None of the senior scholars, except those gaining scholarships, gained 50 per cent, of the possible marks.— The rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr A. Wilson) wrote stating that the total number of boys going up for examination was fifty-four, ana not fifty-seven as given iu tha Press. A few of those who failed were very promising boys, and they had dona better work in the school than a considerable number of those who passed. Of those who failed to secure continuation, there were only eeven of the two full-year scholars—indeed, of the total number presented for examination, 78 per cent, had imly from one year and a-third to one year and a-faalf secondary school. The selection made by the examiners was a good one. However, there were a few omitted who were better boys than many of those who passed, and, if there were any free places to be given, ini accordance with the regulations, be would he glad if the claims of these boys could be considered.—The Chairman said that until the Board knew what number of pupils would l>o coming, it would not be possible to say what places would be available. It was very desirable that the boys most deserving should get free places.—lt was agreed to hold a special meeting a week hence to decide this matter.

Miss Bickrrell wrote acknowledging receipt of the Board’s decision re closing the hoarding establishment, and thanking the Board for the consideration extended to her. Should the Board decide to again, start the boarding establishment, she would be glad to resume charge.—Received. Mr R. M'Oullough wrote accenting tho appointment oa mathematical master at the Boys’ High School.—Received. Mt T. Mackenzie. M.H.R., wired'that had he not been unavoidably prevented from attending the meeting, it had been hia intention to propose a cordial vote of appreciation of the services of the rector and staff of the Boys’ High School for the splendid results of the two years’ work.— It was decided, on the motion of the Hon. T. _ Fergus, to authorise the secretary to write to the rector and staff of tire school congratulating them on the manner in which the school had again distinguished itself in the matter of scholarships arid passes in the recent examinations, thanking them on behalf of the Board for the attention given lo the work of the school, and trusting that they will continue to meet with such pleasing success.
