THE GOVERNMENTS NARROW ESCAPE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 13. {Received January 14, at 8.24 a.m.) The bye-election for Mile End resulted in the return of Mr Harry Lawson (C), who poled 2,138 votes. The Liberal candidate, Mr Straus, polled 2,060 votes. [At the General Election in 1900 the Conservative candidate palled 2,440 votes, and the Liberal candidate only 1,280.] HOW THE BATTLE WAS ONE. LONDON, January 13. (Received January 14, at 8.47 a.m.) •Mr Lawson would probably have been defeated had he not supported the restriction of the immigration of aliens. The chief cause of his victory was his advocacy of the Government Bill dealing with this question, and. which the Liberals have consitently opposed.
