THE LAND QUESTION
THE BOARDS’ CONFERENCE. [Special to the Stab.] ’ WELLINGTON, December 2. The work of the Conference of Land Board members is at present in the preliminary stage. The Minister defined this to the Conference as the collection of every grievance, disability, and proposed remedy or improvement of tie Acts and regulations bearing on the subject of the lands. When .all these are formulated the Conference will discuss the whole list seriatim. It will then be the most complete and practical discussion of the land question ever held in this country. The matters discussed by the Conference during the day were:—(l) The question of whether Crown tenants labor under any restriction inimical to their well-being and unnecessary in the interests of the State. <2) Are the residential conditions too exacting- and do they require relaxing? (3) The working of the present ballot system dealing with applications for lands. Various alterations in the law were suggested, one of the most important being in the direction of giving land boards greater discretionary powers than they at present possess.
