LONDON PRODUCE NOTES

Our. London correspondent, writing on Ootobet 28, supplies the following:— Frozen Meat.—During the pact three weeks the mutton trade has been very dragging, and prices for New Zealand, in sympathy with the lower, values ruling for Plate, are somewhat easier. Australian sheep, the quality of which is fairly good, meet a slow sale at from 3Jd to 3£d per Lb. j hero is but little inquiry for lambs, and prices have declined £d to per lb. The position a/? regards Australasian beef continues very* unsatisfactory, as, although there is a fair demand, in face of the large supplies and low' rates ruling for Plate chilled and frozen, values for the former have further declined. Plate hinds and fores are being • sold at 2|d and 2d per lb respective y. The Maori K.ng shipment, comprising over 12,CC0 quarters of Plate frozen, is reported to have been sold to the Russian Government to supply the Baltic fleet. Current quotations;— Canterbury sheep, 4d bo 4|d ; North Island sheep, 3|d to 4£d; ewes, 3£d to 3|d; Plate sheep, 3£d to 3jd ; Australian beef hinds, 2£d to 2jjd, fores 2d per lb; Canterbury lamb, to sjjd; North Island lamb, 51 d to s£d; New Zea. lend hinds, 2|d to 2|d, fores per lb. Wool.—Since the close of the auctions there has been considerable inquiry on Home account, particularly for descriptions suited to army purposes’ while American buyers are also in the market for coarse cross-bred, for which advanced prices have been paid. Manufacturers here are busy with orders for Japan, but on the Continent trade generally is reported to be. quiet Butter.—Since my last report the demand for finest descriptions has been quiet, and values all round have declined. Finest new : ,-ason’s Australian is worth 102s to 104e per cwt, while for stored parcels, which are now being pressed for sale. 90s to 92s per cwt has been realised. Cheese.—There is very little business doing in this article. Finest Home Cheddars are worth 53s to 575; Dimlops, 48s to 525; and September Canadians, 42s to 44s per cwt. Tallow.—Since my last notes there have been three public auctions, at which the demand has been but trifling, and prices have declined about l-6d per cwt, and it is possible some further concession will have to be made before buyers will be induced to resume extensive operations Hardly any business is passing in Australian for arrival, and prices favor buyers. Quotations to-day are: For mixed, 25s 6d to 24s 9d; for beef, 24s 3d to 255; and for mutton, 25s 3d to 26s 6d per cwt. c.i.f. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile quote on the «pot: Finest mutton, 28b; fair to good, 26s 5J to 27s 9d; fair to good b;ef, 25s 6d to 265; low sorts of mixed, 24s to 25s per cwt. Grain.—The market for wheat has been steady, but quiet, but towards the close buyers are refraining from operating owin" to liberal supplies, combined with large shipments af10at—4,550,000 quarters, as again.-1 5,600,000 quarters at thi? time last year. In Australian for arrival a cargo “ off coast” per Anemone was sold on 26th inst. at’s2s 71d per 480.b, whilst 34s 6d per 480 ib is asked for shipment. The oat market has remained quiet with but littie change in values, and the presence of large stocks exercises a depressing influence on the demand. There is but a limited inquiry for beans and peas at about late rates. The N.Z.L. and M. quote to-day : —Australian wheat, 32s 6d to 32s 9d per 4961b; New Zealand wheat—longberried 32s to 52s 3d per 4961b, shortberried ols 6d to 32s per 4961b; New Zealand barley, 22s to 30s per 4481b; New Zealand oats—Saptrowbills and Cartons 20s 6d to 21s 6d per 5841b, do finest 22s to 22s 6d per 3841b, Danish 16s 6d to lis per 5201b: New Zealand beans (about f.a.q., now), 28s to 30s per 5041b; New Zealand peas (Partridge), 32s to 35s per 504.b; New Zealand peas (blue), 27s to 29s per 5041b: Australian flour. 25s to 26s per 2801b. Hemp.—Consequent upon the good demand for the_ lower qualities of Manila, “good fair” New Zealand has been in request, and a good business has been passing at prices that mark an advance of £2 per ton for spot and near, and £1 for other positions. The market, however, closes dull, and values are 10s to £1 per ton lower. “ Fair hemp is in moderate demand at about .ate rates. Good fair ”on the spot is worth £SO 10s to £3l, JanuarvMarch £SO to £SO 10s, “Fair” OctobsrUrcember £2B, "Fair” current Manila £39 per ton, c.i.f. Cocicsfoot. —The market continues dull and lifeless, and buyers, having apparently satislied their immediate requirements’, refrain from operating, in the hope that prices may “till further recede. This position is accentuated by lower quotations from New Zealand and plentiful offers from America. The N.Z.L. and M. quote to-day: Bright 171b seed at Sis per cwt., c.i.f.
