A CLUB TRAGEDY
SOCIETY SCANDAL ENDED/BY SUICIDE. The Calumet Club scandal ended in tragedy at New York on October 10, when Mr De Peyster Hall, one of the best-known members of New York society, about whom unpleasant stories bad been circulated by some of his fellow-clubmen, committed suicide with a revolver. Charges as to certain disgraceful practices were made against him by the president of the club, Mr Bond, and by Mr Carmack, another member, who is also secretary of the New York Yacht Club. Mr Hall hof.y resented these charges, and issued writs against Mr Bond and Mr Carmack for slander, laying damages at £20.000. On /he day in question defendants went into court with all their witnesses, but before the case was called on news came that Mr Hall had shot himself. The event created a tremendous sensation in New York.
