THE PALMERSTON SHOW
[Fhoh Oop o ws Refouteb.J The Palmerston and Waihemo County show opened to-day in beautiful weather. Before noon the-people had begun to make their way to the pretty show grounds in fair numbers. As post entries are taken, it is impossible to say whether the entries exceed those of last year in number, but the probability is flier will be slightly under, somg classes showing an increase and others a decrease. Undoubtedly one of the bast features of the cattle exhibits was the Ayrshires, which show a great improvement in numbers and quality. There is also a fine lot of hacks and draught horses. Owing to the fact that the show is excluded by agents in the combine, no implements are shown, ,the only approach to machinery, besides a cream separator, being an exhibit of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. There are a fair number of dog carts and other light vehicles shown. Among the visitors was Mr T. Mackenzie, the member for tbs district. Judging began at 11.30 with the cattle section. Shorthorns were judged by Mr J. Patrick, of On tram, and Mr J. Mitchell, of Oamaru, They were good for a country show., and an improvement in former years. Honors were divided between Messrs Donald Miller and T. Muir, both of Shag Talley. The former took prizes for bull and cow over three years, and the latter for a yearling bull and yearling and two-year-old heifers, Mr J. Courts, of Pleasant Valley, winning in the two-year-old bulls. Mr Muir’s yearling bull, which was first in that class at the Dunedin show, again secured the. championship bulls, and Mr Miller’s cow (by Matabelo Chief), which was second at Dunedin, was adjudged to be the champion cow. Ayrshire cattle, a very strong section, was judged by Mr J. C. Cuff (of Oamaru) and Mr J. Allison (of Milton). Mr P. Ireland (of Goodwood) . was invincible in classes for bulls of ail ages, and also won the prize for cow, four years, in milk, with an excellent beak.. The other prizes in cows and heifers were keenly contested for, and divided among. Messrs P. Walker (of Oamaru), A. Gillies (of Hampden), and A. Park (of Goodwood). Air J. Frew (of Herbert) was unsucoesstnl in obtaining a first prize, but got several seconds. air Ireland’s bull Discovery, which was first in his class in the Dunedin show, was awarded the championship for bulls. In cows, the championship contest was really between Mr Ireland’s Princess and Mr Walker’s Queenie and the latter succeeded in lowering the colors of Mr Ireland’s exhibit, which was ■ the champion Ayrshire cow at the Dunedin show. In Polled Angns all the entries were by Mr J. Ross (of Kaftigi), the well-known breeder in this stock. Though he showed no bulls, the quality of his exhibits was high. In the cross-bred section of cattle, for
daily beasts were shown. Prizes were ■won. by Messrs A. Fleming, J. Frew, and A. Park. The poultry entries were rather better than in previous years. Miss D. M'Ritchie took tl>e majority of the prizes with game, Leghorn, Andalusian, and l,;ntaras; Mrs O’Neill scored in Wyandottes and ducks, Mrs Rosa also'’winning in ducks and pile game; Air H. Walker won in Minorcas, Mr J. Brennan in white Wyandotfces, and Mr Muir in turkeys. Air R. Paterson, of South Dunedin, judged the poultry. Draught horses were judged by Mr J. Patrick and Mr J. Mitchell. Air E. Lefevre’s Clydesdale Laddie beat Mr A. Beaton’s Conqueror; iu the class for entires 4 yrs and upwards. The winner is well known in the district and a previous p' ; >e winner at this show, as well as champion at tie Milton show this year. In the-class for entires the judges took some time in coming to a decision, but eventually Mr T. Liken’s Clydesdale Laddie secured the championship verdict amid applause. The draught class as a whole secured the approbation of the judges. Air R. Hagan, of Palmerston, won with a nice two-year-old colt, and Mrs Bannatyne with a yearling colt. In classes for dry' mare and mare with foal, Air F. APCallum {of Flag Ewamp) won. The entries were numerous, and the quality good. No thoroughbred entires were shown, but Mr J. Townsend won in the brood mare section, Air F. H. Ward in the dry mare class, and Mr J, Buddy in the two-year-old class. Mr J. Golightly won in carriage stallions, and APLaren Bros, for brood mare. In the hackney breeding classes the prizes were divided among the Douglas Estate trustees, Alessrs M. Allan, W. Al’Kay, and' M’Laren Bros. In roadster saddle hacks there were remarkably good rings, both in point of numbers and quality. The judging is proceeding. .there was not a great deal of competition in the sheep sections, which were judged by Air W. Grey {of Alilburn) and Mr N. M. Orbell (of Wahnate). The entries for mcrinoes showed a falling-offl, no owes being shown. Mr D. Roes (of Meadowbank) won the championship for rams. Border and English Leicester's were well represented, Mr D. Ross supplying th© champion ram in each section, and Mr J- Ross (of Kartigi) the champion ewe, the Ross brothers being practically the only exhibitors of sheep. In Lincolns, Mr J. Ross iron the championship with a ram and ewe. Ah- J. Ross also won in the pen for the best five cross-bred hoggets. There were only four entries for swine. On the whole, the show is a great success, th© management of Air W. M’Gre'oor (secretary) and his assistant officials benm excellent. 'Die attendance is believed to be a record.
