THE NEW LABOR PARTY

[Special to the Btau. j AUCKLAND, September 23. Die Auckland ‘Star,’ criticising tie new Labor party, says:—“if tho new parly intend to sujqiort Liberalism, what is* the necessity for forming an independent party ? ibe fact is that, advanced and progressive in the bast sense as 31 r Seddon's policy lias been, it lias not been sufficiently rapid ami comprehensive for certain of the Labor leaders in this colony. These gentlemen arc impressed, not only with the conviction that theirs is the only policy that the country requires, but that they are the men to carry it out, and they therefore propose to supersede Air Seddon and his party by a body at hare-brained enthusiasts, addicted to crude and half-digested sthemea—like the State Bank—and , denouncing everybody else as reactionaries and obstructionists. Happily for the, country there is not the remotest probability that Mr Paul and Ids friends will over receive a mandate from the electors to experiment upon us with their highly “ progressive ” programme. What is good in it belongs to Liberalism, and will in due time, as the country is ready for it, be earned into effect. Of what is original in the new policy, some is premature, some is based upon sheer ignore mice and social prejudice, and there is nothing to justify the request that the country should reject in its favor the welltried Liberalism of Messrs Ballanoe and Hcddqn. or that we should oust a body of experienced administrators to hand ourselves over to tho care of a number of uonenlitcs who appear to base tdieir claim to political consideration on the fact that so far they know nothing of the responsibilities of political office or public life.”
