[Special to the Stab.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 26. The weather cleared on Sunday, and the barometer is amuse ally high. A spell of fine weather will be beneficial, as tho tracks are after last week’s rainfall. Riccarton is very busy now. Every daybrings fresh arrivals, and by the end of the present week most- of tho horses engaged at the Grand National meeting should 1)0 on the scene. The latest arrivals arc Kremlin and The Guesscr. The former, who is looking very well, is in great favor for both, the Winter Cup and-Grand National Hurdle Race. Personally, I third: tho distance in the Winter Cup will find him out. but if he' has learned to fence safely and freely he. ought, to bo dangerous in tho Hurdle Race.

A Winter Cup candidate that is doing very well is Lady Lillian. The daughter o'? Fkaethon is gutting seasoned now, and she ought to rim ever so much hotter next month than she did last autumn.

Aka Aka is much liked by ithe Riccarton critics.. He is a vciy fine-looking horse, and is ovk]eißijr in capital. condition. As far as condition is concerned his stable companions, Crespin and Tehae, havo also come in for'favorable comment.

Haydn looks light, and mores a Trifle sorely. He will need carchil hand'ing if he is to reach the post tar the Grand National Steeplechase dressed in Jrs best. Jrfipadu h&s bstn 'suicq bis siilyfil. One of his legs is giving trouble. Merry Boy, another.visitor, has been treated to a, dose of physic, and- tool? things easily till Saturday, when he was- schooled ewer the big fences. He shaped fairly' wel’. . Other hotjee who We been Schooled durmg the poet few days include Phactontis and Agitator (who gave'a capital exhibition of , tl lS. bl ?, fcl ! ces on Saturday) rud Huku aud The Mohican (who fenced particularly ■ru \r°t v - er liurdles on Wedneedly). J he Mohican is developing into a first-rate jumper. Huku met with an accident on hj may, when hj» collided with his stab’e companion Methuen The old von of Vanguard has been lame since, bht I do not think the injury is serious. _ Pipi looks wonderfully well. He is mue h: tagger and fuller than ho was this time last year.

Scnullar's friends are'arranging a benefit concert for him/' The further operation whick ho has to -undergo • hae had to be,

postponed owing to the crowded state of: the Hospital. The Now Sooth Wales home Oblivion H. was spurted on Tuesday, in company with Secret Society. The latter, who is much more forward, held lus companion nil the way, Quanyman has thrown off the effects of his recent attack of influenza, but now imcvos sorely in hj» work Nightfall, tlie three-year-old daughter of Multiform that Mason is taking to Sydney, has created a most favorable impression vhenevor she. has appeared at Riocnrton. .She.was on the course on Saturday in company with Martian, Grand Rapids, and Cruciform. She is a fine, resolute mover.. Grand Rapids hoe improved a great deal in appearance lately, and Martian is the picture of health. Cruciform, although not as forward as she was this time last year, is bright and well. It is rumored here that Plain Bill has recovered most of his; best form. If the story is true Mr Scott’s horse must bo dan-gerous-in the Grand National Steeplechase. The Napier pair, Creiisot and la, both look well. J. Bickerby has left Mr H. A. Knight’s employ, and intends to try for work in the North Island. ‘. Sir George Clifford has decided to mate Treadmill’s dam (Catherine Wheel) with' Birkeniiead. ■ At Riocarton. yesterday morning the Mohican and Streef gave a capital erliibition of jumping in a CLrouit over the hunk os. The Mohican especially pleased the onlookers. Slow Tom (alone) was showed to go at an easy pace when travelling two Circuits over the big fences, and he jumped well, hut again showed a tendency to run down the first fence of the double. He is to be given another schooling taric towards the end of the week, when ho wiU ba allowed to race over the ofosticles. Aka Aka, Oraspdn, and Tahae separately negotiated two steady rounds on the tan, and Haydn was given a similar task. Merryboy appeared to be going strongly at the end of four circuits, while Comfort strode pleasingly over three circuits on the ' inner grass track. la merely trotted, while the following homes were given half-pace to steady work : —-Ranaim, Kaitorc, Lady Soul-t, Huku, Methuen, Rose Shield, Ability, Catherine Gordon, Cerise arid Blue, tktnnio Chiel, Gold Bangle.
