N.E. VALLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL

An ordinary niecthlg of the North-cast Valley Borough Council was held last night; present—Tho Mayor (Mr J. Campbell), Crs Green, Macandrew, Brittenden, Fcrgusson, Wilson, Short, King, Neill, and Rhodes. Cr Neill was welcomed to a seat at the Council tabic. —Correspondence.— The Secretary of tho Dunedin and Suburban General Carriers and Coal Merchants’ Industrial Union of Employers wrote calling attention to the state of the Wain road, which made it difficult for carters to abide by their agreement with the City Council to keep pff tho tramway track.—Referred to Works Committee to report. Mr E. G. Allen, M.H.R-, wrote stating that he had moved at the Municipal Conference tho motions entrusted to him by the Council, and regretting that they had not met with the approval of tho majority of the delegates.—Received. A letter was received from tho secretary of tho Drainage Board acknowledging receipt cf tho Council’s letter of Ist' hist., and stating that the Board wore proceeding as fast as possible with main intercepting sewer, and that as soon as this sewer reached Lindsay’s Creek the matter would bo dealt with. —Tho letter, which referred to the laying of a sower down the Valley, was received. Subsequently it was resolved that as many members of the Council as possible wait «on tho Drainage Board at next meeting, and being under their notice tho pressing necessity of ihe construction of a main arterial sewer in tho Valley. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote referring to an interview between the borough mayor, the City Council’s Tramways Committee, and the electrical engineer re the erection of a shelter shed at tho tramway terminus at Normanby, and asking the Council to contribute half of the estimated total cost (£ls) of the erection of such a shed.—Referred to Finance Committee. Tom Lewis wrote offering to deliver metal free of charge on tho Town Belt road near his farm, if tho Council would break and spread it.—Referred to Works Committee. —Reports.— Tho Finance Committee 'reported that tho sum of £165 10s fid had been lodged in the bank, and recommended that Master James Henderson be appointed cadet in tho town clerk’s office.—'Che report was adopted. The Works Committee recommended that the footpaths on tho cast side of the road from Lindsay’s bridge be repaired; that the Drainage Board be again written to in reference Jo the drainage of Tay street; that the City Council’s attention be called to the condition of the footpath from George street bridge to tho Gardens; and to the want of adequate lighting and the state of the footpath from King street bridge to the Gardens. —Adopted. —Notices of Motion, Etc.— Cr Rhodes moved, in accordance with notice of motion, that the resolution passed at last meeting in reference to the Waipori Electric Power Bill be rescinded, with the object,of introducing another. Ho said that he had consulted several people connected with the Council, and the gist of the position was that if this Bill was passed, it would give the company power to come into tho borough, cut up their streets, and enter properly, with no on'e to say them nay. Tho Council’s powers would practically fco handed over to the Council. v Cr Brittenden seconded the motion, which was opposed by Grs Short, King, Macaudrew, Wilson, Noil, and the Mayor supported by Cc Fcrgusson, and lost on a division. Another notice of motion by Cr Rhodes to rescind a former resolution of the Council in reference to the formation of a footpath in No. 1 street, Opoho, provoked a discussion. If was resolved,- on the motion of Cr Rhodes, that tho clerlO write to the drainage engineer expressing surprise that tho pledged word of tho Drainage Board in reference to the drainage of \ Mrs Hislop’s property had not been ♦anted but.
