Miss Mary Ralston recomrrended tor appointment as female assistant at Forbury School, vice Miss Gow. Bv the death of Mr Peter J. Rattigan, of Great King street (whose funeral took place yesterday), another of the fast-decreas-ing band of (;ld New Zealand soldiers has passed away. Deceased belonged to Die old 65th Regiment, with which he served over ten years, and was present with them in all the gallant service'; performed in Tararaki and Auckland in the sixties. Until the last year or two deceased was a muchrespected . resident of the Arrow district. Owing to the necessitj of early interment, there was not sufficient time to arrange for a military funeral, due to his remains in accordance with recent orders. The deceased leaves a widow and three daughters to lament their loss. Chief Justice Davy, of the Xative Land Court, is to be retired very shortly on a pension, and will be' succeeded by Mr Seth Smith, an Auckland barrister, who held the office some years ago, but relinquished the position owing to private business taking him to England for some time. Mr D. M. M. Matheson, who is being transferred from the railway stores to the traffic branch of the service, was last evening presented with a brief bag as a token of good-fellowship from his brother officers. At the maintenance railway workshops, Dunedin, yesterday, Mr R. T.'Caldow, who has be«n promoted to the Wellington section, was the recipient of a watch from h : s fellow-employees. The presentation was made by Mr Pearson, shop foreman.
