The Hireros, who are at present causing such trouble to their Gsrman rulers, have a very gojd opinion of themselves. One of their songs in honor of their chief runs somewhat as follows : " What is the King of- England. V> 7 Lat is the King of Germany compared -with thee, 0 Mahereo, first among all princes? Have they so many thousand cattle as thou? No! Who is so mighty as art thou?" Their chief wealth-is, of course, in the form of cattle, &ays the ' Manchester Guardian,' Fonae cf their headmen possessing herds of 10,000 or so, and their fixed opinion that the only reason why a white man visits their country is that he may for once in his life get a " square meal," having no cattle of his ovn. When speaking to a European they address him. as " Otyiruinbo"—that is to say, " white thing." When speaking of him to eada other, they call him "mutua," or "slave.**
