The first competition for the cup jjre- ; sented by the ladies of OaH’.aru to i.he j volunteers of No. 3 Battalion was held today under conditions not of a favorable kind. There was no wind, but the day was dull, and the difficulties weie added to bv rain. Four companies sent teams of fourteen men—viz., the Queen’s Rifles |Oamarn), Oamaru Rifles, Hampden Rifles, and Luntroon Rifles. The competition was under service conditions—individual firing at 700 yds, with a time limit, 500 yds vol- ' leys, with a time limit, and 200 yds, with j disappearing head and shoulders targets. The shooting was fair, though not so good | as might have been looked for had the ■ weather been more favorable. The Hamp- ■ den Rifles topped the score with a total of ; 225 points, the Oamaru Rifles coming next ; with 20-1, and the Queen’s Rifles third with i 199. A second and final competition will be held on the Prince of Wales’s Birthday.
