SCHOOLS’ ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Those officials who worked so hard u.r the success of the schools championship meeting at the Caledonian Ground on Satur day are to be congratulated on the result of their efforts. An excellent system prevailed, and without the slightest' appearance ot any exercise of disciplinary- power bein': necessary, the hosts of youthful competitors were marshalled iu due time at the start-mg-pcst, and proceedings went with tin utmost smoothness. This was no mean feat to achieve, and entailed hard work and no little self-sacrifice on the part of many gentlemen, not only on Saturday but some day; previous. The Press ore specially indebted to Messrs J. T. If annum and A.Marrvatt Mi- H. B. Courtis was referee, while M*r A Dey was invaluable as superintendent, and the secretary (Mr P. A. Webb) kept his numerous body of officials, whose name yvas legion, working to the best advantage. As to the sports, the representatives of the Christian Brothers’ School were veryprominent, and pulled c{f no less than eight events, including both the relnv races. The mile running and the mile bicycle race each went to a representative, of the Boys’ High School. The latter provided a verv close finish, ywhile in the running event, apart from the winner, a fine performance yvas put up by a chap named R. Smith alias “Smiler,” who was liberally applauded for his pluck and stamina. A* couple of open handicaps were run at the meeting, one a relay race, and, very appropriately, both these yvere secured by representatives of schools. The following concludes cur report :

On entering the third lap Smith led the way. and ran well ahead until entering the fourth lap. when Gow passed him, and won by about 12yds ; the third man some distance away. One-mile Bicycle (under 15 years).— Final heat: E. Robertson (Boys’ Hieh School) 1, D. Collins (Christian Brothers) 2. Four started. Robertson went to the front round the back in the last round, closely followed by Collins, and a good race icsulted in the former winning by less than a wheel. Time, omin Isec. Throwing the Cricket Ball (under 15 years).—L. Casev (Christian Brothers), 67yds 2ft, 1; E. Joyce (Chid tian Brothers) 67yds, 2. Seventeen competed. H'gh Jump (under 15 years).—E. Joyce (Christian Brothers), <ift (Waikouaiti Maori), 4ft G£in, 2. Seven others competed. Schools Teams Relay Race, 440 yds (under 13 years).—Christian Brothers’ School No. 1 team (E. Wilkie, W. 0. O’Connor, L. Coughlin, and C. Hill) 1, Kaikorai School (F. Smith, J. Lamb, T. Galloway, and N. Johnson) 2. Time, Imin 3|sec. This proved a very close race and was one of the most exciting events of the day.
