MR NOBLE ANDERSON'S REPORT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sh*, —The drainage engineer has not a very high opinion of our intelligence when he asks us to accept some of the statements in his latest report. In this report (published in your issue of the 6th inst.) he says that he rectified the Glenroy mistake, by lowering 702 ft of the drain for -under £l6. The cost was riven in a previous report as £l4 10s. The wages for laying the drain originally amounted to over £4O, and the lowering operation of 2ft referred to involved about three times the labor expended op the first laying. The following g'>ves an idea of the work which had to be done in rectifying the mistake, and I i:avc put against each item what I consider to be a very cheap prk-fl, and your readers' copi.Tton sraise will enabla them to see that the work could not be done for anything like the amount mentioned by the drainage engineer:— Excavating 300 cubic yards of clay at'ls 3d ... £lB 15 0 Refilling and ramming 300 cdoc yards at 6d „. 710 0 Taking asunder, lowering, and relaying 702 ft of 15ia pipes, say 10 0 0 £36 5 0 I say nothing about broken- pipes, while there has also to be added the cost of tho cement used in rejointing the pipes and the cost of about three cubic yards of concrete originally laid under the pipes where the ground was soft and wasted by the subsequent operation.—l am, etc, Chables Kino.
