ROBBER BRIDES.
Two young brides, well known in societv circles in Portland (Oregon), have been arrested, with their husbands, on the extraordinary charge of highway robbery. Their names are Mrs H. W. Haynie and" Mfs Admer T. Johnson. Both are the delicatelynurtured children of wealthy parents, and until recently their husbands were regarded as above suspicion. Johnson was the first to be arrested, and he has been convicted of a number of robberies "with violence in the streets of Portland. He is now serving a sentence in the penitentiary. After lis conviction, his wife— j pretty girl of seventeen—admitted that she had stood by her husband while the robberies were being committed, and helped to rifle the victims. Subsequently JMr and Mrs Hayiiic were arrested. When they contemplated robberies their method was to order out their dog rart at nightfall. It was noticed that they had a mania for driving after dark. • Then," (riven a quiet street and a likely victim. "Mrs Haynie wouid pull up her horee, her husband would dismount and follo.wtne victim a discreet distance from the trap. A blow with a life-preserver generally did the work, and a moment later Haynie would be back in the vehicle beside his wife. It vas only the fact that the couple were foolish enough to drive a curiously-marked horse which gave the police a clue. All the while the series of robberies was in progress, both in Seattle and Portland (for both towns were victimised), Mr and Mrs Haynie were "received" in select circles.
