Mr G. Waimer, who claimed to be the oldest active cricketer in the world, died at Cbristcburch yesterday, aged eightyseven. He arrived in New Zealand in 1858. In 1888 he founded the Veterans' Cricket Club, for players over fifty years of age. and he himself was one of the most energetic members. He took part in a match as late as throe weeks ago. As a writer oi occasional verse Mr Wiflmej gained some local reputation, and a history of his early travels and adventures in Australia was published in London. Old Geelong residents now settled in Danedin will regret to learn of the death of Di James P. Carstairs, who for over half hj oentury occupied one of the -foremost positions as a medical man in Geelong. . Dr Carstairs had until very recently been able to attend to the duties of his profesaou. The commissioner was accompanied by Brigadier Saunders (property and social department) and Major DTMSIan (assistant field secretary). He wes met at the Bluff by lieutenant-colonel Gflmour (chief for NewZealand) and Major Ccmmings (D.Ot for Otago). At the Dunedin station the visitors were met and welcomed by Staff-captain and Mrs Bridges (Dunedin Corps), Adjutant Canty, Adjutant Maddocks, Captain Marshall (South Dunedin), and lieutenant Meade. The commissioner speaks to-night at the barracks. Dowling street. News has been received that Miss Winifred Whitson (a pupil of Mrs Blandford, L.B-A-M.), who left Dunedin two years aqo to pursue her musical studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London, has obtained the degree of L.R.A.M., having previously taken medals >both for pianoforte playing and singing.
