FIRES AT TIMARU.
There was a double fire alarm at Timaru yesterday. At 5 a.m. a fire was discovered in W 7 akeneld's boarding-house, near the railway station. The kitchen was gutted, also several bedrooms, and much damage was done by water. The total loss is estimated at £6OO. The furniture was insured for £225 in tho Affiance Office. The insurance on the building has not been ascertained. A number of boarders were saved by a ladder, but lost their effects. Some young men roused by the bell ringing for the above fire found a small cottage in Theodoria street on fire, and rescued an elderly woman named Collins, the only occupant, in an unconscious condition, and put the first out with buckets. The house was full of smoke, and the woman was rescued only Just in time. She was taken to tho hospital, but soon recovered. The cottage was but little damaged.
