CITY COUNCIL REPORTS
The following is a summary of the report* to be presented at to-morrow night's meeting of the City Council:—' The Works Committee recommend that the roadway, of Lower Rattray street from the corner of the Wharf Hotel to the eastern alignment of. Tewsley street be foqned, at a cost of £575; that the footpath oi the western side of Dowling street from the intersection of Smith street to the pathway leading to the steps be made 4ft wider, and the pathway on the eastern side of this street receive tarred screenings and top-dressing, at a cost of from £3O to £35; that the section of the roadway in Duke street between Great King and Queen streets be coated with bluestone metal, at a cost of about £BO. The Reserves Committee report having instructed the superintendent of the Botanic Gardens and reserves as follows:—To carry out improvements to the emu pen in the Gardens; to continue half-pav to D. M'Donald until next meeting of tee; !# increase Wm. Reid's wages to 7s 6d per day. The city engineer Jbas been instructed to act as to notice received: from Inspector Gassagc to clear land, etc.-, under the Noxious Weeds Act, 1900. The Water Committee recommend thai the application from the Mosgiel Borougi Council for permission to place the intake of the proposed water supply for that borough on the lower end of the Dunedin City Council's reserve on the Silverstream be granted at a peppercorn rental, and subject to all rights of the City Council being conserved ; that 200 ft of 9in water-pipes b« ordered from the Council's London agents (Messrs W. Coward and Co.), at a cost of about £45. Authority has been granted t« Mr G. M. Barr for the following, in proceeding with the work of connecting Morrison Creek with the Ross Creek reservoir: —To arrange with the lowest tenderers for the cartage of plant and trenching accord' ing to modifications in contracts, which hs states would be advisable on account of ona or two details, as in the meantime he would only arrange for the work as far as Ross Creek reservoir; to employ day labor for pipe-laying and jointing, Morrison Creek to Ross Creek reservoir, men who have done similar work for the Corporation to be preferred; to proceed with the intake works at Morrison Creek by small contracts or day labor; to prepare contract* for pipes between Royal terrace and Williams Creek, the present accepted ones being only for portions of that length; to proceed with gaugings of creeks on the Waitati, Leith, and Morrison Creek; to have the pipes already received tested; to prepare contract for relieving, tank; to prepare contract for connection between western branch of Leith and relieving tank; to sink extra pits at site of reservoir if on examination he considers that necesasry.
