At a full meeting of tradesmen last night a resolution strongly condemning the proposal under the Shops and Shop Assistants Bill to make the Saturday half-holiday compulsory was carried unanimously. It was decided to promote a petition against the clause. PAKEKOHE, July 21. The supposed anthrax proves to be inflamation of the lungs in cattle owned by Mr 0. Latimer, caused by the severe cold weather.. A post mortem on, a cow .proved this conclusively. Mr Latimer states that the symptoms in other animals that died were similar. DANNEVIRKE, July 21. At the Police Court to-day W. Thomas was fined £lO, or six weeks' imprisonment, for obstructing the police in a street row. WANGANUI, July 2L The sheep returns for the district comprised between the Rangitikei and Mokau Rivers show a decrease of 223,291 compared with last year. Wanganui district (67,000) had the biggest deficiency, the others being: Hawera 50,000, Stratford 35,000, Patea 32,000, and Rangitikei 29,000. The decrease is due largely to the settlers turning their attention to dairying.
