WELLINGTON, May 27 Referrnvr to his visit to Kawhia, the Premier states that the town has been kept back owing to the surrounding native lands r.ot Laving b;>en dealt with. Now that the Maori difficulty ha* been removed he expects that a large area will shortly 0..< opened for settlement. The time will come, too, when the .--teamers from New Plymouth will call at Kawhia, and there will 1* connection by train with Otorohiinga, ii distance of twenty-five miles, then by the main trunk to Auckland. The Premier says that outside the Auckland province the people do not appear to realise what Mahuta's joining the Government to settle native questions meant. Of about five million acres of native lands the people over whom Mahuta held sway own more than oiw-fouith, and their objection to passing it through the Maori Councils is cow swept away.
