THE FARMERS' UNION
THE MINISTER HOLDS OUT THE OLIVE BRANCH. i'ALMEESTON .VORTH, May 27. The Minister of Lands, at a banquet tendered by the Palmerston branch to the Fanners' Union delegates last ni"ht, expressed a desire to assist the Union.°He sympathised with their aims, and eulogised the late Hon. W. Rolleston and Sir J. M'Kenzie. He promised that the Land BUI to be introduced this session should deal with the varied conditions of tenure. He complimented Messrs Ritchie, Gilruth, and Kinsella on their assistance, and said that land settlement was rapidly absorbing Crown lands. Probably all of any value would be settled within three years. He commended the delegates for the moderation' i>f their tone and reasonable demands. He believed that the right thing for the farmers was to speak plainly, and do good thereby. It was not a sin or crime for farmers to touch politics. He complimented the Union on the absence of party feeling. The Conference resumed their labors at nine o'clock to-day. when a discussion took place upon land valuations and the constitution of the assessment courts. The farmers generally eulogised the Valuer-Gen-eral, but exception was taken to overloading that officer with multifarious duties, resulting possibly in faulty administration. A graduated scale of subscriptions was advocated, proportionate to the values of holdings.
