HOW WELLINGTON OBSERVED EMPIRE DAY.
[Special to the Star.] WELLINGTON, May 26. Locally Empire Day was observed in a very half-hearted fashion. The public offices, the banks, the insurance companies, the lawyers, and seme of the business houses closed their doors, but retailers and tradesmen almost to a man pursued the even tenor of their way, caring little about the glamor of patriotism attached to the day. Only one mercantile vessel in port, the Gothic, recognised the occasion, and she made a liberal display of bunting. On all hands, with the exception perhaps of the Civil Servants, it is admitted that there are too many holidays in this colony.
