CITY POLICE COURT. (B'fore E H C#rew. E'q.. SAT.) Valueless Cheques.—Harold ' Herbert Wequelin was charged with obtaining, on the 15th in t., by means of a valueless cheque, the sum of £3 from John Joseph Connor, licensee of the Criterion Hotil, and was further charged with obtaining the sum of £3 bv the same means on the 21st inst. Mr A. C. Han’on appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty.—Sub-m-----pector Green, on b-half of the police, applied for a remand to the 29th inst., which was granted, accused being admitted to bail in two sureties of £25 each and self in £59. Admitted to Probation.—Malcolm James Sinclair, a cadet in the Railway Department, appeared on remand on a charge of ' tealing numerous articles, of the value of £l2. the property of the New Zealand Government.—The report of the Probation Officer being of a very favorable character, 1 accused was admitted to probation for twelve months, the Magistrate expressing the hope that the Court’s leniency would be taken advantage of by accused, and that he would never again commit a dishonest act. ASSESSMENT COURT. A sitting of the Assessment Court, under the Government Valuation of Land Act, 1900. was held in the S.M. Court to-day-before Messrs E. H. 0 Carew, S.M. (president), Robert Crawford, and G. France. James Dick appealed-against the valuation of sections 66 to 68, block 19—viz., capital value £2.800, unimproved value £1,300, improvements £l,soo.—Valuation” sustained. , Hugh Adam objected to valuation of sec- : tions 5, 6, 22, and 23, block 25, 3 roods. | Capital value £3, SCO, unimproved value | £2,000. improvements £l,Boo.—Reduced to t £3,566, £2,000, -’id £1,566 respectively. | Maurice Joel ealed against valuation 1 of section 11, block 26.—Reduced by consent to capital value £7OO, unimproved value £250, improvements £450. Robert Smith appealed against valuation of section 73, block 18, 4-acre —viz.,, capital value £1,500, unimproved £SOO, improvements £l,ooo.—Valuation sustained. The same'appellant was unsuccessful in securing a redaction in the value of lots 13 and 1.4, 51 to 54, block 20, 21 poles, capital value £l5O.

The National Bank of New Zealand appealed against valuation of'part of section 62, block 20, 8 poles. The valuations were: /Capital value £3,200, £1,700, and £1,500, and these were altered by consent to £5,000, £1,500, and £1,500 respectively. Messrs Smith and Smith appealed against valuation of part of section 34. block 15, 20 poles.—Lessee’s interest in impiovemente (£3,000) sustained.

Dempsey’s Trust appealed against departmental valuation of sections 1, 2, 21, and 22, block 47, 2 roads 19 poles.—The valuations were: Capital value. £16,500, unimproved £5,500, improvements £II,OOO, and these were altered by consent to £16,400, £5,400, and £II,OOO. Annie C. Hunter appealed against valuation *of part of section 15, block 36, 20 poles. Capital value £630, unimproved 5250, improvements £3Bo.—Valuation sustained. •

Alexander Thomson appealed against the valuation of sections 9 to 15, and section 18, block 41, lr 58p.—The departmental valuations, capital value £7.500, unimproved £3,500, and improvements £3,800, were sustained. A few other cases called had been settled out of court by mutual consent of owners and the department. '
