SPURIOUS SPORTS.

In a letter in support of the Spurious Sports Bill, now before the Impend! Parliament, the Bishop ol Hereford says: “As the law now stands it is penal to maltreat a wild animal in captivity. n his Bill simply extends that law so as to make it equally penal to do the same wild animal to death when let out of its trap or box or hag or hamper for the purposes of sport. It is at his peril that the hurdy-gurdy man ill-treats his monkey, or the circus mamiger his performing wilJ animals; but gentiynurtured men and women may with impunity join in and rejoice over the shooting of the dazed pigeon, let out of a trap for the purpose, cr they may still hunt the half-tamo carted stag, and working men and hoys may gather in scores or thousands to see the helpless rabbits dragged from their hamper, shaken in front of the dogs, and then torn to pieces, while they yell around them in wild excitement over their bets. You, sir, I feel sure will agre» with me when I say that if any member of Parliment professes that he is opposed to cruelty to animals, arid yet refuses on this occasion to support this Bill, he incurs some risk of being counted a political Pharisee.’’
