THE PREMIER AND SLY GROG.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—lt was very satisfactory to read in to-night’s ‘Star’ your special correspondent’s report of the interview between the Hon. The Premier and a large deputation of ladies who waited upon him in reference to “ the evils of sly grog-selling existing in the Kawhia district.” The hon. gentleman met the ladies in his usually courteous manner, and after deploring the reported state of affairs, which he said was a subject requiring the gravest consideration, announced that it was thr. “fixed determination of the Government to strictly enforce the law.” Let the Government do this, and sly grogselling, not only in Kawhia, but elsewhere throughout New Zealand, will soon become a thing of the past. We don’t so much want legislation as administration to greatly mitigate and ultimately to abolish the evils of licensed as well' as sly grog-selliniT i n this colony.— l am, etc., Reformer. May 26.
