| [Per United Press Association.] THAMES, May 23. A fire early this morning totally destroyed a dwelling-house consisting of six rooms. Before the inmates were aroused the fire had obtained a gotd hold, and they eft-aped with some difficulty. The owner, •Colter, was absent at the time. The brigade after hard work managed to save the adjoining houses. It is estimated that the damage to the house and furniture amounts to £4lO. There was a small insurance, but in what offre is not yet known. The local bodies are combining with the ob : ect of inducing the Government to Fet apart a portion of the land at Piako Swamp, when drained, for selection by residents of the goldfields district. The movement is warmly supported. The Go yernment have already been requisitioned on the matter. WKSITORT, May 23. In the case the Westport Volunteer Fire Brigade v. J. O'Neill, ex-captain, a claim for the recovery of uniform or £2 10s and damages £2, the magistrate found that the defendant was rightly expelled' from the brigade, and gave judgment for the plantiffs. He ordered the defendant to deliver hiR uniform to the, secretary of the brigade before >fondav next, in default of delivery judgment to'go for the plaintiffs for £2 10s, defendant to pay £1 general damages and £5 6s costs. May 23. Webster, the town clerk at Devonport, was fined Is and £3 8s costs at the Police Court for irregularities at the recent Council election at Devonport. He allowed a room with two entrances to be used for polling. ;iud appointed a deputy returning officer, when it was his duty, there beiDg only one booth, to preside himself.
