Maoei Htt.t-—The Maori Hill Borough Council met last. evening; present—The Mayor (Mr Butler), Crs Pilkington, Robertson, J. B. Booth, Passmore, N. A. Booth, Crowther, Smith, Aaskoy, and Davidson. Mr H. D. Bedford forwarded a letter (previously overlooked) from the Minister of Lands, stating that he could see his way to make no promise in regard to requests for assistance towards widening the Water of Leith road. It was decided that a deputation consisting of the mayor, Crs Davidson, Robertson, and Aaskoy wait on the local members to see what could be done.—Messrs Mondy, Sim, and Stephens wrote returning deeds of mortgage (Dunedin and Rosiyn Tram Company to Glendining and others), stating that the effect of consenting to it in the form endorsed thereon by the company's solicitors would be to consent also to any assignment in exercise of the power of sale contained in the mortgage. H, then, the mortgagees assigned the rights granted under the deed of delegation to a man of straw, the Council would only have the company to look to for rent and penalties,- and their liability, burdened with a debt of £23,000, would not be of any moment. The consent was in the usual form, but the Council would not, under the circumstances, be acting unfairly to limit the consent, and suggesting the addition of certain words to the form of consent. It was resolved that the mortgage be consented to, with the proviso (as suggested by the solicitors) that the consent shall not extend to any assignment under the power of sale contained in the said mortgage.—The Drainage Board's "request that the Council remit the charge of £2 for rent of the Council Chambers at the time of the Board election was met by a decision to adhere to the former resolution,—Mr N. Y. A. Wales wrote, in response to a request from the Council, stating that he had made an estimate of the cost of septic tank installation for a population of fifty at about £2OO, and for an installation for 100 of a population at about £285. The area required for the smaller installation would be about 30ft x 20ft, and for the larger 50ft x 30ft. The Clerk said this was a reply to an inquiry he had made in reference to the drainage of St. Leonards-on-the-Hill, complained of by the Golf Club. The letter was referred to the South Ward Committee for report.—Messrs Tnmbull and Jones forwarded an estimate for the extension of electrio lighting in the borough on the understanding that five new lanterns would be installed—namely, two on Newington road, one on Driver's road, one en Lothian road, and one on Well street. The lights on Newmgton road would be taken from the trolly wire. The other lamps would be taken from the lanterns already installed. In all, twenty-three poles would be required, and the estimate was £73 16s 6d The matter was ultimately referred to the South Ward Committee, with power co act as regards the five lights and also an additional light in Driver's road. Ore Smith, Pilkington, Crowther, and Aaskoy were elected a Finance Committee, and Crs Aaskoy, Passmore, Davidson', Crowther, and Robertson a Works Committee.—The Committee for East Ward, with the mayor, were instructed to report on a scheme for the better lighting of Woodhaugh.
