FOOTBALL.

ASSOCIATION.

• The opening match between the Rangers and the Rosiyn Wednesday teams was played at Mornington under somewhat adverse circumstances, the -ground being very sloppy, and a good exhibition of the game was imposible. The Rangers kicked off, and had the Rosiyn. shortly in difficulties) when Reid by a long' kick shifted the play. Fcr some time, the Rosiyn had the Rangers penned up, but the Rangers cleared their line in fine style, and although six cornei kicks were, given against them the Roslyr failed to score. After.some give-and-take play the Rosiyn were awarded a penalty, and Paterson, taking the kick, piloted a beautiful goal. Just then the whistle blew for half-time. On resuming play "the Rosiyn forwards, by a good piece of passing, rushed up the field, and C. Braithwaite had a shot, the ball just grazing the post. '1 he Rosiyn were having somewhat the -best of the game, when A. Gfibbs, by a long Jrick cleared the Rangers' line, and Sligo, securing possession, passed to Lambert, who shot ■» "real beauty." The Rosiyn from that out had the opposing side penned up, but through indiscriminate kicking were, unable to again score, and a very pleasant game resulted in a draw, both sides'scoring a goal. For the Rosiyn, Reid, Aitchemu, Clark, Braithwaite, and Paterson prayed well, as also did Sligo, A. Gibbs, Harvey. Cartbew, and Lambert for the Rangers. Mr J. Wilson, the president of the Referees' Association, 'acted as referee, and gave, his decisions fairly and' impartially, and the Wednesday players are extremely grateful to him for the interest. he took in the game and the instructions he gave to the newer players. It was, gratifying to note also that none of his decisions were questioned. The following are -tin referees for next Saturday's Association matches:— First Grade.- = -Mornington y.
