SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY.
The first case of relief by the newlyformed • Shipwreck Relief Society to distressed seamen was dealt with last week. Early in this month the auxiliary schooner The Brothers was totally destroyed by fire (caused by an explosion) at the Bluff, the vessel being burned to the water's edge. The captain and crew, five in number, lost everything they possessed, and were practically destitute. Mr J. F. Kirby, the organising secretary, reported the matter, and a meeting' of the Executive being quickly called and the case inquired into, a certaiu sum was voted to each of the distressed seamen. Assistance would have be<>n afforded sooner had a branch committee been formed at the Bluff, and it was only in an indirect manner that the society became aware that assistance was required. Efforts are being made to have branch committees formed in all the principal seaport and inland towns in the colony, these committees to act as representatives of the society; and they will be empowered to grant temporary relief -where it is uruently required, subject to rules drawn up by *ho Shipwreck Society.
