COUNCIL OF CHURCHES.

Some forty representatives of city and suburban churches attended the quarterly meeting of the Council of Christian Churches, held in the First Church Hall lost evening. The Rev. W. A Sinclair (president) occupied the chair. The Rev. W. Hay, of the Hanover street Baptist Church, was elected a member of the Council. The Rev. P. W. Fairclough said that the gentleman to whose energy the existence of the Council was largely due had since last quarterly meeting been honored by his university with a handle, an appendage, or an addition, in which they had all rejoiced, and perhaps had had other opportunities of congratulating him. As a Council, however, they had not had the opportunity of doing so, and seeing that he was the father of the Council and their first president, and seeing also, if one knew nothing more than had appeared in the papers, he might not always be with them, the speaker thought it a very suitable thing that the Council, even at this late hour, should congratulate Dr Gibb npon the honor conferred npon him, and through him upon this City. He had great pleasure in moving—“ That this Council congratulate Dr Gibb on the honor which has been conferred on him by his university, and trusts that he will be long spared to enjoy and adorn it.”—Mr H. H. Driver seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously, and briefly acknowledged by Dr Gibb. Mr E. Rosevear announced that a visit would shortly be paid to the colony by the Revs. F. W. Macdonald and H. A. Raynes, delegates of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and that they would preach in City churches during their visit to Dunedin.—lt was accordingly resolved—“ That this Council tender their enthusiastic congratulations to the British and Foreign Bible Society on the attainment of their centennial year, accord the heartiest welcome to their delegates—the Rev. F. W. Macdonald, M.A., and the Rev. H. A. Raynes, M.A.—and trust that their visit will be eminently successful.” Mr A C. Begg moved—” That this Council are of opinion that the running of trams on Sundays is an injustice to the employees, and is altogether unnecessary, and should be abolished.”—Mr Q. Reid seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The next meeting of the Council was fixed for the 17th of August.
