SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
The annual meeting of the above society was held in the Town Hall this afternoon. Mr R. Chisholm (president) occupied the chair, and there were a large number cf ladies and gentlemen present. The Chairman, in moving the adoption | of the report, said that no less than eighty- j four cases had been dealt with during the year, os against sixty-seven for the provious year, and it was only in dealing with ! such cases that one could get any idea of | the magnitude and nature, of them. Each individual case meant a tremendous amount i of work, and he thought that it was highly j creditable to the secretary that she had j managed to . get through so many cases. Without the services, ho said, of Mias Ethel j Benjamin and Dr Siodcbcrg the society j would bo able to cany on their efforts with | very little success. In concluding, Mr ; Chisholm paid further compliments to the | Revs. W. Sinclair, W. Curzon-Siggers, the | secretary. Miss Cohen (the canvasser), and , the Salvation Army. \ The Rev. W. Curzon-Siggers, in second- ■ ing the report, said that he had much plea- i sure in doing so, inasmuch as he was pri- ; mirily responsible for drafting that part of the report which emphasised the value of . the work of the Salvation Army. But for ! the Army some of the cases could not have I been successfully dealt with, whilst the offi- ! eers of the Army hnd rendered valuable | Christian sympathetic help in various coses. | If their reference to the Army commended their support to the public, then some due return to the Army would eventuate. Their improved financial position was due to the energetic labors of Miss Cohen, whose name was omitted from the report. They could not too strongly impress upon the public j and their legislators the much-needed re- | form in the law to which the report le- i ferred. Mr R. Chisholm had given an amount of time and labor to the wgrk of I the society which it was impossible to esti- j mate. It was owing chiefly to the energetic I canvass of Miss Cohen that they were in the position of having a balance in hand. The motion was carried. On the motion of the Rey. W. Sinclair, seconded, bv Mr Duncan Wright, the following office-bearers were elected; President, Mr R. Chisholm; vice-presidents, Rev. .Cnrzon-Sig"ers and Mrs W. H. Reynolds ; treasurer, Mrs Gordon Macdonald'; committee—The Mayor, the Rev. W. Sinclair, Dr Siedeberg, Adjutant Waldie. Mesdames G. L. Denniston, Wise, Withers, Fry, Misses Shand and Cohen, Mr G. L. Denniston; hon. solicitors, Miss Beniamin, Messrs F. R. Chapman and A. S. Adams. Votes of thanks were accorded the Mayor and the Press.
