CASUALTIES.
On Saturday afternoon, when fhe representatives of the Wansanui Fire Brigade were practising the laader-and-hose event qt the Marine Parade, Napier, a nasty acr cidfcnt occurred, Two of the teanj, Sims and Halligan, were on the ladder, ope halfway up and the other n_ear {he top with the hcse, when the water was turned on. The high pressure caused the man on top to lose control of the hose, with tie result that it performed a nuniber of vigorous antics, eventually hecomhig entangled in the ladder, which it precipitated into the middle of the street with those who were on it. Both men were hurt by the fall, the ladder also striking them. They were hnmecliately sent to the hospital; where it was ascertained that the injuries, were not so serious as at first thought. A girl named Eva Jackson and a companion, bathing in the surf at Manly (N.S.W), were carried into deep water. Exciting rescues ensu§4, but Eva Jackson succumbed to the effects of her immersion.
John Greig, who was hurt at Port Chalmers on the 28th February, is still unconscious. The hospital authorities entertain hopes of his recovery. John Samnel Brown, aged seventy-two, an old age pensioner, was found dead in his hut at Hindon yesterday.
