THE GIRLS OF AMERICA.
Wo have heard it argued as to who are the most beautiful girls in tho world, and the balance of opinion chiefly went with the girls of Limerick or those of America. Now the Viscount De Santo Thyrso, writing in the Smart Set,’ says that pretty women are as much in tho minority in tho United States as in any oher country. Beauty, liko gold is scarce everywhere. In some places, or in some countries, the number of pretty women is greater than in others, and in this branch of natural production the United States is not behindhand.. This, however, is only a foreigner’s view of the subject. To tell tho truth, I have never met an American < T irl of twenty whp did not think herself faschSating. This is self-confidence; and for a woman to believe she is beautiful is halfway to real beauty. In the first place, a plain woman, who is aware of her plainness, is unhappy. Man is a selfish animal, and despite what novels say about sad women and the power of tears, unhappiness is as repellent to a healthy mind as disease to a healthy body
