A WELCOME HOME.

South Duncdin and St. Kilda combined to tender a "welcome home" social last night to the boroughs' troopers who have returned from the war. There were about 150 couples present in the new South Dunedin Town Hall, and dancing, mingled with speech and song, was kept up till an early hour. The guests were Lieutenant Conn, Sergeants Lear and Bragg, Corporals Goodman* Alexander, and Ashton, Farrier Ogg, Bugler Wardrop, Troopers Mitchell, Vintiner, Mason, Bare, Quarterman, Brown, Goodman, Bushel I, Hogg, Ingell, Johnstone, Breese, Stenaway, M'Donald (2), Freeman. Rosenbrock, Harley, Mills, Jennings, Waldie, and Hunter". Apologies for absence' were received from Sergeant M'Gregor, Corporal Matbie, and Trooper Johnstone (Helena street). Two other absentees were Troopers Brown and Dray, who aire both away with the Coronation Contingent. The Mayor of South Dimedin (Mr J. Chetwin) presided over the gathering, and in formally welcoming the troopers said that he felt he was voicing the feelings of the people when the said that t they were all proud of the Xew Zealanders who had gone to the front. It was a proud thing to have sent ten contingents away to help the Mother Country, and every man 'who went away had clone his duty. Mayor Hodges, of St. Kilda, also welcomed the men home, and complimented them on their bravery and zeal. Lieutenant Conn replied on behalf of the troopers. He referred to the relations between the Imperials and the colonials, and said "that as far as the Seventh were concerned the New Zealanders had got along all right. During the evening songs were sung by Messrs J. Clark, T. Anthony, and A. Davie. The Committee responsible for the. management of the social were Mr Chetwin (chairman), Mr Hodges (St. Kikla), Crs Somervillc, Fleming, and Lyon (South Dunedin), and Messrs Ritchie, Dray, Bragg, and Earnshaw, Mesdames Lyon, M'Donald, Ansell, Donovan. Beatson, and Wardrop, and Misses Chetwin, Garbntt, Donovan, and Brown. Cr Lyon acted as hon. secretary and treasurer. Messrs Somervillc,. Drav. and Ritchie were the M.C.s.
