MILTON NOTES.

A goodly number of fishing licenses have already been issued insMJlton, but angling enthusiasts have not so far been favored with good streams. The thaw in the back countryhas kept the river's bank high for the last fortnight, and no improvement can be expected for a few days, as there is still much snow on the ranges. Pish, nevertheless, are fairly plentiful, and the rivers will be more favorable than they have been for the past eight or nine yeara, the dirty water difficulty having now been overcome. In view of the brass bands'. contest at Mosgiel, tho local band are jsractising assiduously, and there is a perceptable improvement in their play. The election campaign is to be opened by Mr J. A. Scott, the Liberal candidate for Bruce, at Milton next Thursday night. Mr Scott has the advantage, of, speaking politically, being a new man, so that lie will be- judged largely by his platform •utterances. Should he be able to introduce any originality into his addresses his chance of success will be considerably enhanced. The tender of a local job printing firm has been accepted for printing tho electoral roll, which is now in hand. The printing of the rolls has hitherto been done by the local newspaper, and at a lower rate than is usual elsewhere. The Government are not likely to have any cause to qomplain at the cost to them, of the Bruce election. There, were 3,696' names on the roll in 1899, and this' year's -will bo much the same. There will, however, be a large supplementary roll on this occasion. Mr Parker M'Kinlay has been appointed to?edit the Bruce Prohibition paper, 'The Standard,' in place of Mr J. A. Scott, resigned.
