VICTORIA'S FINANCES.
SIR A. J. PEACOCK ILL. HIS OPPONENT COMMITS SUICIDE. Press Association—By Telegraplj—Copyright. MELBOURNE, September 27. (Received September 27, at 10.8 a.m.) The Premier states that the finances are in a serious condition. The deficit for the present year is now estimated at £700,000. Sir A. J. Peacock has been seized with illness. It is believed that lung trouble has suddenly developed. He is forbidden to leave his room till after the elections. Mr Martindale, who came out in the reform interest in opposition to Sir A. J. Peacock, but who subsequently retired, committed suicide by partially blowing his head off with a gnn. A remark made by Sir A. J. Peacock that there are reformers who go about during the week telling lies and preach from the pulpit on Sunday rankled in his mind, despite Sir A. J. Peacock's assurance that they.did not refer to him.
