The Thames High School Governors find themselves in a peculiar position. Several leases have fallen in, and the arbitrators appointed to decide the amount of compensation have awarded £I,OOO to tenants. The Board have only half that amount available, and are unable to pledge the land for purposes of a loan. It has been decided to ask the .Government to pass the necessary legidation to enable the Board %> extricate themselves from tie present financial position. WESTPQRT, August 19. The local Acclimatisation Committee decided to do their utmost to co-operate with other societies in order to secure the passing of an amending Fisheries Bill legalising the issue of licenses for fees; also to secure Mr Rigg's claim, or its spirit, entitling angling licensees to enter private Land. The Committee virtually resolved not to declare thp fishing season open until the amending Bill is passed, but otherwise the season will be opened on Ist October. Large quantities of brown and rainbow trout are being released. The local butchers have raised the price of meat one penny per pound. The Coronation Memorial Fund now amounts to £417, providing tho Council pay over £2OO. INVERCARGILL, August 19. *£ e . Rowing Cluo'b Carnival realised £SOO m a week. Crawford, solicitor, sued Irardiner, a farmer, of Papakaio, for £45 damages befog profit at the rate cf 6d per bushel alleged to have been lost through defendant being short in a big contract by 579 sacks of wheat. The Timaru Pre&bytery to-day set up a coimmttep to confer as to the best mode at Procedure to secure the proposal jn regard to the Bible in schools. The Timaru Hospital is at present taxed to its utmost, capacity. So great has been the demand for accommodation that soma of the nurses have voluntarily given up their quarters, and are now being accommodated in tsnrs. There is no epidemic, the cases under treatment being of a miscellaneous nature. The Board let a contract to-day for additions and alterations to the nurses' quarters and fever wards, at a cost of about £3,500.
