LONDON, July 10. In the House of Commons, during the debate on the Education Bill, Mr Balfour supported Mr H. Hobhouse’s (U.) amendment to make the elementary education compulsory on the local authorities. This was carried by 271 to 102. Sir H. CampbellBannerman, Sir W. V. Harcourt, and a majority of the Liberals, and Messrs Austen Chamberlain (U.) and C. B. Renshaw (C.) voted in favor of its being left to the option of the local authorities.
