The Maiden Steeplechase was won by Royal Mail, with Ennis and Springfield in the S laces. Betting: sto 4 against Royal Mail, to 1 Ennis. Won by a length and a-half. Time, 4min 19sec. Keilor Hurdles: Speculation 1, Roeemont 2, yE-op 3. Betting: 6 to 2 against Speculation, 6 to 1 against Alsop. Won easily. Time, 3min Battleaxa went out favorite for the Braybrook Handicap, but finished last. THE GISBORNE WINTER MEETING. GISBORNE, July 10. The Gisborne Racing Club’s steeplechase meeting opened to-day in glorious weather. There was a large attendance, the railway bang usel for the first time to convey people to the Park. Results:— HURDLE RACE, of 50 sovs. Two miles.—Papatu (9.7) 1, Faukei (11.0) 2, Hylaa (9.7) 3. Scratched: Sylvanus, Wilson, Medallius. Time, 3min 57sec. Dividend, £2 14s. LADIES’ BRACELET, of 15 sovs. One mile.—Bruiser (11.2) 1, Majestic* (11.0) 2, Sergeant-Major (11.0) 5. Dividend, £l6 4s! TRIAL STEEPLECHASE, of 40 sovs. Two miles.—Gryphon (10.7) 1, Pu’Jack (9.7) 2 All started. Kotiki fell. Dividend £1 10s.

An Invercargill telegram says ;—The Star First Filter mot their first defeat this season in the football match with the Pirates, when the latter won by a try to nil Bain, the Star’s speedy three-quarter, had his arm broken near the wrist when the game was nearly over in a collision with Jacobs. A Wellington telegram states that at a meeting of the Football Association it was decided that the conditions of tho Brown shield competition for 1902 should be on the same lines as last year: Dunedin to travel to Auckland and Wellington to travel to Dunedin.
