SHIPPING SUBSIDIES.

The Right Hon. W. J. Pirrie (of Harland and Wolff's shipbuilding establishment) informed the Subsidies Committee that subsidies as a general principle would not help British shipping if they were given merely as a bounty. They encourage inefficiency, and invite retaliation.
