In connection with the damage caused by the Oroua River by the recent floods, the Borough Council resolved last night to request the Government to send a survevor to inspect the river. It is estimated tnat the proposed protective works will cost five or six thousand pounds. MARTON, July 4. The Ruapehu Lodge of Freemasons (English Constitution) last night resolved to transfer allegiance to the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. «
NAPIER, July 4. The A. and P. Society vesterdav discussed the position of the Rabbit Board. Urder the old Act the evidence of the rabbit inspector was sufficient to gain a conviction for failure to keep down rabbits, but the amending Act of last session provides that witness could be called for defence, and judgment given according to the weight of evidence. This, it was pointed opt, made k pj-actically impossible for the Board to get convictions, ,and "the result is that unless the ameuding clause is repealed the Rabbit Board will dismissal! the. inspectors and cease to exist, The society carried a resolution that the amending Act be repealed and the old provisions reh stored. William Higgins ai.d James Palmer were committed for trial to-day on a charge of breaking and entering at Hastings.
