CANTERBURY NOTES. [Special to tite Stab.] t CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. Tbs weather during the past week has been particularly unfavorable to training operations. Since Wednesday heavy rain showers alternated with drizzle from the south and fleeting glimpses of sunshine have been general all over Canterbury. Asa result the tracks at Biccarton are soaked, and afford little opportunity for fast work, or, indeed, work of any kind. The attempt of the Ashburton Racing Club to foster weight-for-ago racing has had a rather disappointing result. Last year tho club received forty nominations for their Ashburton County Stakes; last week they received only thirty-four for next year’s race. The nominations, however, include Cruciform, Blazer. Cannie Chiel, and Orloff, as woU as Wellheok, Golden Vein, Aberlow. Imperator, and Pallas, so that their quality compensates for the lack of quantity. A story seems to have gained ground that L. Hewitt has severed his connection with Mr Stead. This is not correct. Hewitt left on a trip to Australia on Friday last, but be will return in time to wear tho yellow jacket next season. W. Holmes has accepted an engagement to rid© for Mr J. B. Reid. HARRIERS. The Y.M.C.A. Harriers held their run on Saturday from the Anderson Bay Sunday school. The pack were in charge of Mr W. I G. Hannah (capta'n). The “hares” (Messr* H. O. Hercus and R. J. Kihroy) laid a splendid trail, and one and all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon’s sport. The road to Tomahawk was taken for a short while, and thence across paddocks and sandhills to the margin of the lagoon. Here it was found that the “ hares ” bad forded the lagoon |n preference to going round it, so there was nothing left to do but for the pack to fol-.
