SHAKESPEARE AND CERVANTES.
It is ona of the popular delusions of which wc arc mtvitabjy reminded on April 23 that Shakespeare and Cervantes died on that day so many years ago. Those who imagine that on th*t day in 1616 Death reaped as his harvest two of the world's greatest geniuses, consistently forget the fact that Governments have played havoc with the calendars, and that the calendar in use in Spain in 1616 was not the calendar by which time was reckoned in FngJiWd in that year, Spain adopted the Gregorian Calendar pp its original promulgation in 1582, a,nd f he 23rd of April in Spain thus became the 13th hi England. So that, though both countries may keep April 23 as one of the unable dates of their history, jt does not iujlow therefore that the days correspond pi i.cfyial rims. There was, indeed, ten days • ilitference between England and Spain y.hflH Shakespeare died, f-'o that Cervapte,s musthave bsep alive after Shakespeare was dead and buried.
