AUCKLAND, April 5.

The load branch of the Educational Institute appointed to devise a workable stheme of appointments and promotions of teachers have decided to urge on the Minister that if extra capitation be voted it should be devoted to increasing the salaries ci country teachers. The Governor arrived to-day, and is expected to make an extended slay here.

In commemoration of the transfer of the historic business of Selanders and Co. to Levin and Co., the Wellington staff were entertained by the retiring iirm a* dinner last night. The function, which was attended by representative citizens, was a very pleasant one. The firm of Selanders and Co. is one of the oldest in the colony, dating from the foundation of the settlement.

The Rev. J. R. Smalky, pastor of the Wesleyan Church, and Mrs Smaller, were farewcllcd at a largely-attended social gathering last evening, and presented by the olhce-bearers and congregation with several handsome gifts. Mr Smalley goes to the Thames.

CHEISTCHURCH, April 5.

Mr Beet-bam. p;ave judgment this morning in a ca-v concerning the liability to rating of the uas company's pipes and mains. He said that as all the companies of the colony were stated to be concerned in the result'it would be best to decide the matter in the Supreme Court. Accordingly he gave judgment in favor of the assessment, so that the decision could be appealed from to the higher court.
