Saturday, Apbil 5,

(Before E. H. Oarew, Esq., S.M.)

liie'itenant-commanding Waters, of the Volunteer Naval Artillery, objected to the rating of the Garrison Hall. Mr Park, for Mr Plaits, appeared for the Corporation.— As the building was used for other purposes than volunteering, Mr Waters conlendcd that the hall should be exempt from king.rated, under section 39 of the Drill Shed Act and section 35 of the Defence Amendment Act, 1900. He pointed out that during the year the hall had been let for bazaars and' balls. The total revenue amounted to about £l4, which was expanded on keeping the building in repair.— His Worship said that £l4 did not more than keep the building in repair, and that under section 9 it was exempt from rates. Elizabeth Cowie objected to the valuation of*£l4 on section 98, and by consent it was reduced to £7.
