New York freight rates (says a contemporary) have been advancing steadily since the previous Trisco mail, quotations having increased from 22s 6d to 30s per ton for New Zealand lines It is uncertain whether this high rate will continue. Business generally to New Zealand is very quiet, orders being small and not very numerous. It is confidently expected, however, that the trade this year will be better than last. The Waihora, as soon as she reaches New Zealand from Sydney, will be put again into the Lyttelton-WeTlington ferry service until the Monowai's return to Wellington. Then the Waihora will come on to Dunedin, and sail for Melbourne via Bluff and Hobart on the 6th April in j>lace of the Tarawera, whose movements are yet uncertain. The Monowai will come down to the Port, and there go into dock for overhaul.

The s.s. Paparoa, from London via Cape Town and Hobart, and now lying in Wellington, will come down to the Port via Lyttelton about the 3rd prox. She will discharge about 2,400 tons of cargo at Port Chalmers, and will then proceed to load with frozen meat and wool, afterwards returning North. She finally sails from Wellington for London) on the 24th April. The Perthshire, from London via Sydney, now lies at the Bluff. She is expected to arrive about the week end at the Port, wher? sho will load with meat and vool. Subsequently she leaves for Lyttelton ard Wellington, being timed to sail from tto latter port for London about the 12tb pnx. r !he barque Silverstream, now lying at the Viitorii wharf, will complete loading her wool to-morrow, and will probably sail lor London on Saturday, a full ship. THE MOKOIA. Tbe s.s. Mokoia, from Melbourne via Hobart snd the Bluff, arrived at tbe tongue wharf this morning. She left Melbourne at 5 p.m. on the 19th inst, called at Hobart two days later, and at 8 p.m. on Monday Lad arrived off the Bluff. It was here that delay occurred, for, on account of her late arrival, the vessel had to remain outside all night. The Mokoia left the Bluff for Dunedin at 4 p.m. yesterday. Light and variable winds with calm seas were tht) order of things till Saturday night, when fresh east winds, accompanied by moderately high seas, were encountered. 15'tv.f>n the Braff and Dunedin the weather was settled and calm, with a light northeast wind. There have been festive times aboard the Mokoia this trip, and the pass-? users are unanimous in saying that their sojourn aboard has been a most enjoyable one. Among the attractions got up for their benefit was tbe trial of a mock breach of promise caea. A portion of the saloon was curtained off and a bench erected, on and around which judge and lawyers, attired in robes of black macintosh and wig* constructed by that bandy man the boatswain of canvSkS and cotton waste, condrcted the suit wtrJi a fine chow of seriousness.

Tbo Mokoia brings a large quantity of general cargo for this port, including transhipments ex s.s. Meissen, Barbarossa, Reijrate, Coogee, Ortona, Britannia, Darius. THE SUEZ CANAL.
