IRVING ON ART LIFE.
Sir Henry Irving has just completed an engagement at Minneapolis (U.S.A.). The ' Daily Telegraph’s ’ correspondent asked the distinguished actor to give his opinion concerning the influence of art on American life. In reply Sir Henry said: “The influence of all art on American life is most marked, and, of course, amongst the arts that ol the theatre has its Ml value. Its influence being immediate and personal, it has a result more quickly apparent than, perhaps, that of any other branch of art. The art life of the American nation during the last eighteen years shows in advance little less than marvellous, and not a little of the nation’s material progress is made possible through it. In this country the theatre is an institution so well established in the hearts as well as the needs of the people that it has already become de facto a national institution, and I have little doubt the time will soon come when it will he part of the formal or official organisation of great communities here. In sach a movement as this on the part of a vigorous and supremely alert people there can be no question as to the ultimate good."
